Functional Twin Blocks : Early Interceptive Treatment

Often, Sheffield families are unsure when it’s the right time to start brace treatment for their children. Mixed information is confusing, and parents are worried their child will miss out.

In most cases children start brace treatment around the age of 12-14 depending on their current dental development stage.

In some cases we start earlier when growth is a leading factor or if the malocclusion is causing severe trauma to the developing teeth.

Twin Blocks

What are Twin Blocks?

Twinblock braces are functional braces used to correct an increased overjet, often Yorkshire families call this an overbite and in basic slang terms 'goofy or buck teeth'. Twinblocks are used in the peak of the adolescent growth spurt, in girls this can be around the age of 10-14 and for boys 11-14.

How do Twin Blocks work?

Twin block braces are functional braces used to correct an increased overbite, which is sometimes referred to as 'goofy or buck teeth'. Twin blocks are used at the peak of the adolescent growth spurt. In girls, this can be around the age of 10-14 and for boys, 11-14.

The twin blocks consist of 2 parts, one for the top teeth and one for the bottom teeth. The two parts must be worn together; when worn together, the jaw is pushed forward into the desired position. Block braces must be worn full-time for a minimum of 6-9 months.

Benefits of Twin Blocks

Twin blocks prior to fixed brace therapy can often mean no need for permanent tooth extractions or reduce the quantity of teeth needing extraction to achieve an even straight smile. Twin blocks can also improve the side facial profile.

Other early intervention cases

Other cases where we may start treatment early is when a malocclusion is causing severe trauma to the developing teeth or soft palate. This can be due to an anterior crossbite or a very deep overbite.
